Behind 18 points apiece from
Sara Zabrecky and
Josie Filer, UIC topped Davidson 63-55 in the Hostilo Hoops Classic Tuesday. The Flames scored the last nine points of the game, and assisted on 19 of their 21 made field goals.
The game was back and forth throughout. The lead changed hands 16 times, and neither team led by more than five until UIC's final run. The Flames went ahead in the fourth quarter on a Zabrecky three, and again later when
Keona Schenck dished a perfect bounce pass to
Jaida McCloud for a layup. McCloud found Filer on a roll to the basket that put the Flames ahead for good.
The Flames forced three straight turnovers down the stretch, courtesy of steals by
Kristian Young, McCloud, and Schenck. Young made an athletic play to tip a pass, and then throw it off a Wildcat out of bounds. McCloud, charged with guarding Davidson's leading scorer Elle Sutphin (24 points), made the play of the game with the Flames leading by one. She stripped Sutphin of the ball and then led the fast break after corralling her steal, dishing to Schenck for a layup that energized the bench.
The Wildcats had 11 offensive rebounds, but none in the last nine minutes. UIC clamped down on the glass, using rebounds and five free throws in the last 30 seconds to seal the win.
UIC unleashed a barrage of three-pointers throughout the game, finishing with 11 made triples on 22 attempts. Zabrecky made five and finished with career highs in points and rebounds (5). Filer was a perfect 4-for-4 from downtown. It was the most made 3s by the team since making 12 versus Evansville in December 2017.
McCloud led the team with six rebounds, to go with her six assists. Young matched her with six assists of her own and also had three steals.
The Flames will conclude their stay in Savannah on Wednesday, when they face Austin Peay at 1 p.m.
