Flames Win in Overtime Against Saint Thomas, 75-71

The Flames improved to 6-1 on the season, the best start since the 2015-2016 season

The Flames (6-1) needed a little extra time to secure their victory on Sunday in front of a home crowd at Credit Union 1 Arena, defeating the Saint Thomas Tommies (2-3) in overtime, 75-71.

The Flames were led by Ky Dempsey-Toney, scoring 19 points, nine rebounds and three blocks in just under 20 minutes out on the court. Josie Filer landed a double-double on the day with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Keona Schenck played effective minutes off the bench, scoring a season-high nine points, shooting 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

The first quarter was a slow start for the Flames, as they found themselves trailing going into the first timeout, 14-9 but they trimmed it to one after the first quarter, 19-18.

In the second quarter, the Flames had arguably their best offensive 10 minutes the entire game. Outscoring the Tommies 26-13 in the quarter, the Flames found their rhythm in their shot making and capitalizing at the foul line. The Flames went 9-for-10 in the quarter in free throws, pushing them ahead of the Tommies 44-32. The Flames finished the night at the foul line going 19-for-25, while the Tommies attempted eight the entire game.

Coming into the second half, the Tommies gained offensive momentum, outscoring the Flames 19-11 in the third to make it into a one possession game. The Flames kept hold of their lead until 2:40 left in the game, when the Tommies regained the lead, 64-60 going into another timeout.

With less than a minute remaining, Danyel Middleton (six points) found a lane to drive for a layup to bring the Flames within two. After making a defensive stop on the other end, the Flames were left with 19.8 on the clock to respond when Josie Filer drove to the post and landed a lay-up to tie the game. The Tommies failed to convert in the last possession of the regulation, leading to overtime.

Overtime play began with the Tommies scoring three unanswered before Sara Zabrecky (nine points, five assists) landed her third three of the game to tie it up. After the Tommies' Jordyn Lamker scored on the next possession, the Flames went on the offensive. After Filer missed a lay-up, Dempsey-Toney grabbed the board, went for the put-back and was fouled. Missing her free throw, the Flames managed to maintain the possession, leading to Kristian Young (seven points, five rebounds, four assists) to land a free throw to regain the lead, 70-69. Defensive stop after defensive stop led to the Flames heading to the foul line when Dempsey-Toney secured the win with two consecutive makes in the closing seconds.

The Flames remain at home on Thursday when they are set to host cross town foe in the Loyola Ramblers (2-4), tip-off is scheduled for 7 pm.
