Flames Set to Battle the Bearcats in Weekend Matchup

12/3/2022 11:56:00 AM

The Flames aim to continue their momentum, this time on the road as they take on the Cincinnati Bearcats Sunday afternoon.

Now standing at 7-1, the Flames are off to one of their best starts in years. Recently sitting at a four-game winning streak dating back to November 22nd in a win over Davidson (63-55), the Flames reached this mark for the first time since December 2017. They finished the week on a short two-game homestand with wins over St. Thomas (75-71 OT) and Loyola (45-36).

This is the first time each of these programs have met on the hardwood. The Bearcats are proven battle tested so far, sitting at 5-3 early on this season. They currently are coming off a win against North Carolina A&T just this past Thursday, 78-73.

Tip-off is scheduled for 2 pm and is available to watch on ESPN+

Young's steadfast productivity

  • In the closing minutes Young manage to secure the win from the foul line, going 5-for-6. This was a season high mark for the guard. She finished the game with nine points.
  • Young is currently ranked, 8th in assists (3.9), 15th in minutes (30.8) and 18th in steals (1.5) in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Production off the bench
  • In all but one game this year, the Flames have led their opponents in points from productive minutes coming from players off the bench.
  • Leading the way for the Flames in this category is Ky Dempsey-Toney. Averaging over 13 minutes this season, she has scored in double figures in four games, all within the Flames current win streak.
  • Keona Schenck leads the bench in minutes with 24 minutes a game and scored a season high nine points in the overtime win against St. Thomas back on November 27th.
  • Tiana Jackson continues to play solid minutes after she missed most of last season due to injury. She even saw 21 minutes back on November 23rd in the Flames win over Austin Peay.
Making it count
  • The Flames continue to shine with their work defensively as they have the best scoring defense in the MVC at 54.9 ppg. That mark is ranked 35th nationally.
  • After only going 2-for-9 from beyond the arc in their win against Loyola, the Flames still are proven strong from three. They still have a 36.4% success rate and are ranked 2nd in the MVC.
