FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Clay Conn hit his first collegiate home run Saturday as the UIC baseball team dropped a 10-1 decision to #3 Arkansas in the third game of a four-game series.
Â
Conn's blast was one of five home runs hit Saturday, with the Razorbacks using a four-run third inning and a five-run sixth inning to put the game out of reach.
Â
The Flames looked to strike first in the third inning with a two-out rally. After the first two batters were retired, Conn drew a walk and advanced to third on
Rayth Petersen's single. Petersen stole second but the pair were stranded at second and third after
Bryan Rosario nearly beat out a grounder to second.
Â
An error by UIC in the bottom of the third proved to be costly as the Razorbacks scored four unearned runs on a pair of home runs.
Â
The Flames tried to counter in the fourth after
Ryan Nagelbach singled to lead off the inning. With two outs,
James Harris beat out an infield single, moving Nagelbach to second, but the threat would end with a warning track flyout by
Joshua Figueroa.
Â
Conn put the Flames on the board in the fifth with his first collegiate home run, as his solo blast pulled the Flames within three at 4-1. The redshirt freshman became the fifth different player this year to hit a home run.
Â
Arkansas once again used the long ball to extend its lead in the sixth as a grand slam and solo shot pushed the Razorback advantage to 9-1.
Â
Sean Dee walked with two outs in the seventh before Conn was hit by a pitch, but a strikeout would end the Flames' final scoring threat of the afternoon.
Â
Cristian Lopez earned the start for the Flames on the mound, allowing four runs (all unearned) while striking out four over four innings of work.
Â
The Flames and Razorbacks will close out the four-game series with the series finale on Sunday. First pitch is set for 12:30 p.m.
