TAMPA - Flames softball (2-10) fell to Army (2-8), 5-0, and No. 24 USF (13-3), 5-0 on Friday on the opening day of the weekend tournament in South Florida. UIC was unable to get the offense rolling in the opening game against Army, mustering only two hits. The Flames faired a little better, grabbing three hits against USF, but were unable to convert with runners on.Â
GAME ONE
Tara McElligott and
Larisa Villa both managed a single hit on the game.
Carlee Jo Clark got the start in the opening game against Army but was pulled in the third after a tough outing.
Miranda Gomez finished out the game, allowing only one hit in four innings of play.
Army grew their lead in the second inning, scoring three runs. The Mules added two more runs in the third to add some insurance runs to their lead.
GAME TWO
The Flames struggled in game two against No. 24 USF. The pitching of USF ace
Georgina Corrick allowed only one hit in her five innings pitched.
Maica Ingles was the only Flame member to grab a hit off of Corrick. Ingles led off the top of the fourth inning with a double but was unable to score as UIC was unable to make good contact against the star pitcher.
After the fifth inning, the USF Bulls relieved Corrick, and the Flames were able to find some success in the batter's box. McElligott picked up her first hit of the game with a single to left field in the sixth inning. Villa picked up a hit to lead off the seventh inning, but UIC was unable to string a rally together, as they fell 5-0.Â
Christina Toniolo pitched against the Bulls of South Florida, allowing three hits, five runs, and three earned runs in her four innings pitched. Gomez came in relief for the second time on Friday to pitch the final two innings for UIC. Gomez allowed one hit, two walks, and struck out two in her appearance.
UIC will look forward to tomorrow, Saturday, Mar. 5, to face some more top-tier competition, as UIC will open the day at 8:00 a.m. against Florida A&M. After the Flames face the Rattlesnakes, UIC will take on the USF Bulls for the final time of the weekend. First pitch against the Bulls is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
