Pitcher's Duel Goes Against Flames

Green Bay scores twice late to take the series finale, 3-1

CHICAGO – UIC and Green Bay engaged in an old-fashioned pitcher's duel Sunday afternoon, but it was the visiting Phoenix that claimed the rubber match of the three-game series by a score of 3-1.

Both pitchers went the distance with Brittany Baneck allowing one run on only three hits over 7.0 innings for Green Bay (16-16, 8-4 Horizon League). UIC (7-22, 4-9 Horizon League) sent Carlee Jo Clark to the circle for the second outing in a row and the newcomer scattered seven hits, but allowed only three runs of her own.

Green Bay scored in the top of the first inning Sunday. Tiffany Giese led off with a single, stole second base and moved to third on a wild pitch. Giese scored on a two-out base hit to left field for the first run of the day.

After stranding a pair of runners on base to end both the second and third innings, UIC pitcher Carlee Jo Clark, the designated player, helped her own cause to lead off the bottom of the third. The Carol Stream, Ill., native crushed a triple off the wall in right-center field for her team's first hit of the day. Three batters later, Tara McElligott brought Clark home and evened the score with a sacrifice fly to the warning track in right field.

The score remained knotted through the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. The Phoenix opened the seventh with the top of its lineup and Giese singled once again. After a sacrifice bunt and a walk, Green Bay had two on with one out. Jadin Justman re-entered and hit a ground ball to second base. UIC's Isabelle Garcia flipped the ball to Larisa Villa at the bag, but the umpire ruled there was no contact and everyone was safe. The next batter walked to bring in the go-ahead run and the Phoenix would add one more on a wild pitch.

Villa and Clark collected some hard-hit singles in the bottom of the seventh with one away, but a fielder's choice and fly out to left field would end the ball game.

  • At the plate, Carlee Jo Clark had her first multi-hit performance in a UIC uniform. She also tripled for the second time in as many games on Sunday.
  • Clark threw her second complete game of the series Sunday. In two outings she allowed only three earned runs in 14.0 innings of work with 10 strikeouts.
  • Tara McElligott's sacrifice fly in the third inning was her first of the season and the fourth of the year for the Flames.
