DAYTON, Ohio – The UIC baseball team dropped a 5-3 decision to Wright State Friday afternoon. Tied at 1 after seven innings, the Raiders scored five in the eighth to take a 5-1 lead. UIC battled to the final out, scoring two runs in the ninth and had the bases loaded with two outs but were unable to push across the tying runs.
Â
Joshua Figueroa launched his second home run of the season while
Ryan Nagelbach collected a pair of hits.
Nate Peterson, who got the tough-luck loss, threw 7.1 impressive innings, allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out eight.
Â
It was a pitcher's dual through the first seven innings as things were tied a 1-all entering the eighth. Both runs came in the fifth inning off of solo home runs, first by Figueroa and then a leadoff home run in the home half of the inning.
Â
Things turned in the eighth after Peterson allowed a leadoff single. Peterson struck out the next batter, his eighth of the day, before handing the ball over to
Cristian Lopez. The Raiders would go on to score a pair of runs on an RBI triple and a fourth run on a throwing error before a solo homer made it 5-1.
Â
UIC battled its way back into the game in the ninth inning.
Bryan Rosario walked to open the ninth and with one out moved to third on the double by
Breck Nowik.
Cole Conn was walked to load the bases and Figueroa grounded out to drive home Rosario from third.
Â
Nagelbach walked to load the bases once again with two outs before a pinch-hitting
Garrett McCarthy drew a second consecutive walk to bring home a run. With the bases loaded and two outs, down 5-3, a strikeout would end UIC's bid at a comeback in the contest.
Â
The rubber match of the series will take place Saturday afternoon, with first pitch set for 12 p.m. (CT).
