Flames Come From Behind to Beat Cleveland State

Career victory No. 300 for UIC head coach Lynn Curylo

CLEVELAND – UIC scored seven unanswered runs and received another sensational performance in the circle to propel past Cleveland State Friday afternoon, 7-3. The win was the 300th in the head coaching career of Flames leader and UIC alumnae Lynn Curylo.

Neither team could find a run through the first four innings. UIC (11-28, 8-12 Horizon League) put at least one runner on base in each of the first five innings, but could not capitalize, stranding seven in that span. CSU (18-21, 14-7 Horizon League). Took advantage of some shaky defense in the bottom of the fifth with an error and passed ball preceding a three-run home run off the bat of Brooke Albaugh.

The Flames turned the table in the top of the sixth inning, scoring four runs of their own while the Vikings were plagued by a pair of miscues. Reigning Horizon League Player of the Week Dee Dee Caskey walked to open the inning and three batters later she would score on an RBI single from newcomer Hailey Cowing. With the bases loaded, Emma Crowley reached on an error and two more tallies were added to the total when Grace Fleming and Jojo Santiago scored. Maica Ingles would add a sacrifice fly in the stanza and when it was all over the UIC found itself in front, 4-3.

Alyssa McIntosh worked around a one-out single from CSU in the bottom of the sixth before the offense went to work once again in the seventh against reigning Horizon League Pitcher of the Week Melissa Holzopfel. Caskey was a catalyst again as she singled with one down and stole second. Fleming followed with a single to left to score the speedy Caskey. Two batters later, Cowing clubbed a run-scoring triple; Crowley then slugged her third double in the last two games to push the lead to four.

That lead was plenty for McIntosh as she needed only seven pitches in the bottom if the seventh to dispatch the Vikings and close out the game. The sophomore matched a career high with five strikeouts for the second time in as many games. She registered her fourth complete game of the season Friday.
