Nowik Homers Twice in Tuesday Setback

Breck Nowik hit a pair of home runs in the 13-3 setback to Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. – Breck Nowik hit a pair of home runs Tuesday afternoon as the UIC baseball team dropped a 13-3 decision to Northwestern in midweek action.

Nowik, who entered the game with one long ball on the season, hit a pair of solo shots in the seventh and ninth innings, becoming the first UIC player with multiple home runs in a game this season. On the mound, eight different pitchers saw action as part of a planned bullpen day for the Flames.

The Wildcats jumped out to an early 2-0 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first but UIC was quick to cut into the deficit.

Joshua Figueroa doubled off the right field wall with one out in the second. The catcher then advanced to third on a wild pitch and came around to score on the same play after the catcher's throw sailed into left field.

Northwestern pushed the advantage back to two in the home half of the second with a solo shot to right. The Wildcats would add two more in the fourth after an RBI triple and a wild pitch to make it 5-1 in favor of the hosts.

The Flames looked to threaten in the top of the fifth after Ryan Lin-Peistrup doubled down the left field line with one out. Ryan Nagelbach followed with a walk to put runners on first and second with one down before Nagelbach moved to third on a flyout, but a groundout would end the threat.

Northwestern would tack on three in the fifth and one in the sixth to build a 9-1 lead before Nowik added a second run to UIC's tally with a no-doubter out to left in the top of the seventh.

The 'Cats scored three in the seventh and one in the eighth to close out the 13-2 decision.

UIC will be back in action this weekend, welcoming Oakland to town for a three-game series beginning Friday afternoon. First pitch is set for 4:05 p.m.
