CHICAGO -- UIC Hall of Famer, Olympian, and NCAA champion Art Shurlock passed away May 14 at the age of 88.
Shurlock was inducted into UIC's Hall of Fame in 1992. He competed in gymnastics for the Navy Pier team in 1955-56, and was the Midwest Open All-Around champion in 1955. After transferring to Cal Berkeley, he won the NCAA pommel horse championship in 1959 and was a two-time NCAA all-around runner-up.
After his collegiate career, Shurlock became a member of the US National Team, competing in several international competitions including the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. He then created a dynasty at UCLA as the head men's gymnastics coach for over 30 years. Shurlock's Bruin teams won nine Pac Ten championships and two NCAA titles. He coached 14 individual NCAA champions, 26 All-Americans, and nine Olympians, four of whom won gold medals.
