UIC suffered a 3-0 defeat to Miami (Ohio) on Senior Day at Flames Field Sunday. The RedHawks scored twice on corner kicks, and proved to be dangerous throughout the match, putting nine of their 11 total shots on goal.
The senior class of
Frankie Frericks,
Kaitlyn Montague,
Leah Senese,
Jackie Santibanez, and
Grace Haines, along with senior manager
Evette Tamayo, were honored along with their parents in a pregame ceremony. "A lot of things happened to those seniors over their time here,"
David Nikolic said, noting that aside from graduate transfer Frericks, the entire senior class was recruited to UIC by previous coaching staffs.Â
"I've only known them a little over a year, and they've been really respectful, they've carried themselves in the highest fashion. They're good people and they deserve to be recognized today. I was hoping for better contributions from everybody to support them and to support the team. It's a group that I wish the best for and it's a bummer the way the game went for them today."
Scoring Summary
- Miami made the most of their first corner kick of the match, springing Makenna Morrison into the middle of the box where she headed Camber Hayes' service into the net.
- Hayes initiated the second goal from the corner as well, this time finding Madeline Schlecht in position for a header past Sara Sanabria.
- Morrison scored again in the 62nd minute, getting past a Flames defender and into the box where Sanabria charged at her, only to see Morrison loft a shot over her and into the net.
The Flames started on the front foot as they took the match's first four shots and two corner kicks.Â
Frankie Frericks was in the mix early, with two shots in the first eight minutes. One of her shots came in the action after a Miami yellow card, and gave the fans who powered through a drizzly afternoon a brief hope of a goal. "I thought the first 16 minutes were good," Nikolic said. "We got them to turn the ball over, we got the ball in good spots, we were in the box, we had a couple good attempts on the goal."
Frericks ended with a team high three shots. She made her second start of the season, as part of an XI that included all five seniors.
Miami's first goal came in the 17
th minute, after which "Miami had more of the play, more consistently. They built things more than we were able to shut down like we did in the first 16 minutes. We didn't play good enough."
The chances for the Flames diminished after they went down 1-0, though
Brielle Gomez took an open shot after a corner kick was punched away. UIC's defense was able to clear a couple of crosses into the box and the Flames went into the break down by just one.
Riley Collett, who played a season high 45 minutes, all in the second half, made her presence known immediately. Within the first 10 minutes of the half, she lofted a dangerous cross into the six that the keeper was forced to grab; and she made a nice move on the run to shake two defenders on a separate advance.  Late in the match, she tried to shoot across the goal face from inside the six but pushed her shot outside the post.
Yulexi Diaz made winning defensive plays even as Miami increased their lead. At the hour mark, she screened off an attacker to allow Sanabria to make a play on the ball. Later, when Sanabria moved up in the box to affect a play, Diaz alertly got in front of the goal and broke up another play that threatened to score. Diaz was the only field player to log 90 minutes. Sanabria also played the full 90 for the first time in her career.
The Flames allowed more than one goal for only the second time all season. They outshot their opponent for the fourth straight game, though by the slimmest of margins – 12-11. The team will have a full week of rest before their next match, a visit to Eastern Kentucky next Sunday.
