CHICAGO (Oct. 27, 2023) – The UIC men's soccer team (9-4-3, 4-2-2 MVC) closed out Missouri Valley Conference play on Friday, as it hosted Northern Illinois on a rainy and cold night at Flames Field. After tallying the opening goal of the match in the 11
th minute, the Flames added a second half insurance goal to earn a 2-0 victory.

COACH'S COMMENTS
"The biggest difference for us tonight was our attack," commented head coach
Sean Phillips. "We were assertive when we needed to be offensively, and that made the difference for us in a crucial match."
Â
With the victory, the Flames guarantee at least a top-four seed in the Missouri Valley Men's Soccer Championship, which is set to kick-off on Nov. 5. Check UICFlames.com beginning Wednesday night, Nov. 1 for information regarding the MVC Championship.
Â
FIRST HALF
- The Flames wasted no time jumping on the offensive, as just 11 minutes into the match, UIC had the opening goal as Joshua Torres (Chicago, Ill./St. Patrick) netted his sixth of the season on a beautiful cross from Jesus De Vicente (Casas Bajas, Spain/Iowa Western CC) to put the Flames ahead 1-0.
Â
Â
- UIC maintained the offensive pressure throughout the first 45 minutes, as the Flames would out-shoot the Huskies 11-3 in the first half, taking the 1-0 lead into the locker room.
Â
SECOND HALF
- Despite some quality early second half chances for the Flames, they were unable to scratch across the insurance goal they needed for the first few minutes of the half, as NIU keeper Jakub Rojek made five saves on the evening.
- Bart Muns (Amsterdam, Netherlands/Santa Barbara CC) would finally double the Flames' advantage in the 68th minute, as he would be the beneficiary of a friendly UIC bounce off a Huskies defender that found the ball in the back of the NIU net, giving the Flames a comfortable 2-0 lead.
Â
Â
- NIU would push men forward for the final 20 minutes of the match, narrowing the shot deficit to 11-8 in the second half, but were unable to get a ball past Oren Asher (Hetzliya, Israel/Rutgers), as the Flames went on to take the 2-0 victory.
