Women’s Basketball Dominates UW-Parkside in Exhibition

Four Flames scored in double digits in Monday night’s victory

CHICAGO (Oct. 30, 2023) – The UIC women's basketball team had an impressive showing in its exhibition game against UW-Parkside on Monday. The Flames outscored the Rangers 94-73, with four players scoring in double digits in the victory.
 
FIRST QUARTER
  • In her UIC debut, Dais'Ja Trotter (Louisville, Ky./Seneca/Cincinnati) initiated the scoring with a nice lay-in just 14 seconds into the game.
  • The Flames jumped out to a 10-0 lead before UW-Parkside scored their first points of the evening.
  • With less than four minutes remaining in the quarter, Makiyah Williams (Chicago, Ill./Trinity/Marquette) rolled past her defender for a smooth layup. She followed that play with a three-pointer moments later.
  • A long three-pointer from Krystyna Ellew (Chicago, Ill./Taft/Wisconsin) marked her first points at UIC. The Flames led 30-13 at the end of the first quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
  • Trotter hit back-to-back threes to end a 90-second scoring drought for both teams. She was the first to reach double figures in the game with 11 points.
  • Less than two minutes remained in the quarter when transfer Sandra Frau-Garcia (Pego, Spain/Casper College) led a fast break, finding Ky Dempsey-Toney (Franklin, NJ/Franklin) on the block for two points, extending the UIC lead to 53-26.
  • Senior Sara Zabrecky (Munster, Ind./Munster/St. John's) made her first three-pointer of the game in the closing seconds of the period, contributing to the team's 81-percent shooting from beyond the arc.
  • Williams led all scorers with 13 points going into halftime, while Keimari Rimmer (Chicago, Ill./Proviso East/DePaul) wrapped up the half with 11 points and eight rebounds.
THIRD QUARTER
  • UIC opened the second half with an 11-0 run. Senior Danyel Middleton (Chicago, Ill./Bolingbrook/Marquette) contributed six points during the run, while McCloud added four points, including an and-one.
  • UW-Parkside responded with a run of its own, quickly scoring four points, which narrowed the UIC lead to under 30.
  • Zabrecky's second three-pointer of the game put an end to a three-minute scoreless period for the Flames.
  • Despite facing a Rangers double team, Dempsey-Toney managed to score a layup just under the three-minute mark, prompting UW-Parkside to call a timeout with UIC leading 78-42.
FOURTH QUARTER
  • Keona Schenck (Somerset, NJ/Franklin) made a quick impact, scoring on a bank shot shortly after entering the game, which brought the score to 88-56 with seven minutes remaining.
  • At 3:45, Megen Sanaj (Chicago, Ill./Latin School of Chicago) recorded her first field goal as a Flame, after she drove in for a left-handed layup.
  • UIC's bench outscored Parkside's reserves, posting a 42-14 advantage.
  • The Flames concluded the game with a 55-percent shooting percentage, converting on 17 of 31 attempts.
FLAMES ON FIRE
  • Rimmer recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Though Frau-Garcia scored only one point, the point guard provided assists to her teammates on 10 different occasions, with just one turnover.
UP NEXT
UIC will open its regular season at Loyola on Nov. 6. The Flames and Ramblers will face off at 6 p.m. at Gentile Arena.
