Men's Soccer Drops Tightly Contested Match at DePaul

Flames Fall to Blue Demons Despite Netting Match's First Goal

CHICAGO (Oct. 4, 2023) – The 25th ranked UIC men's soccer team played its final non-conference road match of the 2023 regular season Wednesday, as it traveled to nearby DePaul for the final of four matches against Chicago-area opponents this year. After netting the match's opening goal in the sixth minute, the Flames allowed the Blue Demons to equalize and take a one-goal advantage in the first 45 minutes. On the strength of an early second half free kick goal, the Blue Demons went on to win the match by a final score of 3-1.

FIRST HALF
  • Thanks to a tremendous build-up off the feet of Sidney Warden (London, England) and Bart Muns (Amsterdam, Netherlands/Santa Barbara CC), Joshua Torres (Chicago, Ill.) found the ball at his feet, and made his left-footed strike count, firing it past the Blue Demons' keeper to give UIC an early 1-0 lead in the sixth minute.

  • Less than 10 minutes later in the match, DePaul used a quality build-up of its own to equalize, as Noeh Hernandez tallied the right footed strike to level the score at 1-1.
  • On a broken play in the 27th minute, DePaul took the lead back, as Nathaniel Enriquez fired a shot from a sharp angle past Oren Asher (Hetzliya, Israel/Rutgers) to give the Blue Demons the 2-1 advantage.
  • The Flames out-shot DePaul 10-8 in the first half, but still hit the locker room trailing by one goal at 2-1.

SECOND HALF
  • Despite a few early close calls for the Flames in the second half, the Blue Demons doubled their advantage in the 64th minute off a long free kick goal for Hernandez, his second of the match to give DePaul a 3-1 lead.
  • Diego Quintana (Chicureo, Chile) saw significant minutes for the Flames Wednesday, playing 29 minutes in just his third match of the year.
  • UIC maintained a decided advantage in shots throughout the match, finishing with a 28-12 surplus in the category.
