Women’s Basketball Heads to Northwestern for Thursday Clash

The Flames head to Evanston to take on the Wildcats Thursday night

CHICAGO (Nov. 8, 2023) – After taking down Loyola in its season opener, the UIC women's basketball team (1-0, 0-0 MVC) will play its second game of the regular season Thursday as the Flames will make the quick trip north to Evanston to take on Northwestern.

LAST TIME OUT
The Flames defeated crosstown rival Loyola 67-51 Monday in its regular season opener. The win against the Ramblers was a complete team effort, with four players reaching double figures scoring. UIC jumped out to a 22-5 lead after the first quarter and controlled the game from start to finish en route to the 16-point victory over the Ramblers.

Makiyah Williams (Chicago, Ill./Trinity/Marquette) led the Flames with 13 points, Dais'Ja Trotter (Louisville, Kentucky/Seneca/Cincinnati) added 12 points, Keimari Rimmer (Chicago, Illinois/Proviso East/DePaul) scored 11 points and Danyel Middleton (Chicago, Illinois/Bolingbrook/Marquette) tallied 10 points for the Flames in the victory.

Six Flames played more than 20 minutes in Monday's win, with seniors Jaida McCloud (Peoria, Illinois/Richwoods) and Kristian Young (Indianapolis, Indiana/Lawrence North) tying for a team-high 24 minutes played.

ON MCCLOUD 9 
McCloud continues to climb the ranks as one of the Flames' top scorers in school history. After her nine point performance against the Loyola, the senior is tied with Rachel Story (2012-2014) for 18th in career points in program history.

SCOUTING NORTHWESTERN
Thursday's contest against the Flames will be the regular season opener for the Wildcats. Northwestern played in an exhibition game against Lewis last Thursday, defeating Flyers 80-54. Melannie Daley led the Wildcats in the exhibition with 18 points, two steals and two blocks. Paige Mott also made a significant impact on the court, scoring 10 points and grabbing seven rebounds.

Northwestern shared the ball well, piling up 19 assists on 26 made field goals. The Wildcats defense also had a positive showing, limiting the Division II program to a mere 26.3-percent shooting from the field.

SERIES HISTORY
The Flames and Wildcats are poised to meet for the 30th time in this upcoming matchup. Northwestern holds a 22-7 advantage in the series. The latest victory for UIC over Northwestern came at home in 2007 when the Flames defeated the Wildcats 53-45. The two teams met last season in a closely contested contest, with the Wildcats narrowly winning 66-62. Ky Dempsey-Toney (Franklin, New Jersey/Franklin) led the Flames with a 16-point performance, while McCloud (Peoria, Illinois/Richwoods) netted 15 against Northwestern.
