PEORIA, ILL. – The UIC women's basketball program (16-12, 7-10 MVC) defeated Bradley (3-26, 0-18 MVC) this Saturday afternoon, 64-38.
The Flames were led offensively by
Ky Dempsey-Toney, who scored a team-high 17 points and had three rebounds.
Josie Filer had a double-double in the game with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Sara Zabrecky sank four three-pointers to end the game with 12 points.
COACHES COMMENT
"I'm proud of my team for not looking at that record, respecting Bradley and for competing for 40 minutes," UIC head coach
Ashleen Bracey said.
FIRST HALF
- The Flames started off strong in the first quarter, scoring 15 points with a field goal percentage of 42%.
- On the defensive end, UIC held Bradley to just five points to give them a double-digit lead early.
- UIC shot even better in the second quarter, landing 47% of its shots. The team outscored Bradley, 20-12.
- Relying on the work of their frontcourt, the Flames scored 22 of their points in the paint in the first half.
- Ky Dempsey-Toney had a perfect first half, going five for five in the field. This is the first time she has reached double figures since scoring 15 points at UNI on Jan. 21.
SECOND HALF
- Led by junior Sara Zabrecky, the Flames had their strongest offensive quarter, outscoring the Braves, 20-10. Zabrecky hit three three-pointers in the quarter, scoring nine of her 12 points.
- After grabbing nine rebounds in the first half, junior Kristian Young (one point, three assists) had four more rebounds to lead the team with 13 in the game. That is a career high for the guard.
- After scoring nine points and grabbing five rebounds in the first half, Josie Filer secured her fifth double-double of the season, scoring five points with five rebounds in the second half.
CONFERENCE STANDINGS
- UIC remains tied for sixth place in the Missouri Valley Conference standings with Southern Illinois (11-16, 7-10 MVC).
- The Salukis walked away victorious Saturday against Evansville, 105-59.
JOSIE AND JAIDA'S JOURNEY TO 1,000
- Josie Filer's performance against Bradley leaves her just nine points away from 1,000 career points. She leads the team in scoring (12.2 PPG) and rebounds (6.9 RPG) this season.
- Jaida McCloud finished the game with nine points and is now 17 points from the career milestone. She has scored in double figures in 18 games this season.
UIC returns home next Thursday to host Belmont (19-10, 15-3 MVC), tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
