Women's Basketball Set to Open Day Two of the WBI Against FIU Saturday Afternoon

This will be the third time the Flames and Panthers are set to compete and the first time since 1989

LEXINGTON, Ky -- The UIC women's basketball team (18-16) are set to begin the second day at the Women's Basketball Invitational at the Clive M. Beck Center in a match-up against Florida International (12-19) beginning at 12 p.m. ET.

MATCH UP BREAKDOWN
  •  This will be the first time the Flames and the Panthers have competed against one another in more than 33 years.
  • They first met back on Feb. 17, 1984, in Chicago, where the Flames walked away victorious, 74-67.
  • The Panthers found their retribution in their next meeting with the Flames. FIU defeated UIC back on Dec. 17,1989, 87-61.
  • FIU finished tied ninth in Conference-USA play, going 7-13 against conference opponents. 
  • The Panthers were eliminated in the first round of the conference tournament against Charlotte (12-19, 7-13 C-USA) on Mar. 8, 72-59.
  • FIU averaged the most offensive rebounds (14.70 per game) and second-most averaged steals (9.27 per game) in the Conference USA.
  • Senior Kaliah Henderson averages 15.7 PPG for the Panthers. She has scored 20+ points in over nine different games, including 31 points in their lost to Charlotte in the conference tournament.
A BATTLE AGAINST THE AGGIES
  • UIC opened the WBI taking on New Mexico State (17-16) Friday afternoon, coming up short, 51-41.
  • The Flames were led offensively by junior Jaida McCloud, who scored a team-high 10 points and grabbed six rebounds.
  • Junior Kristian Young scored nine and sophomore Ky Dempsey-Toney netted six points in the match-up.
ON MCCLOUD NINE
  • Jaida McCloud is only 19 points away from cracking the top 20 in UIC's all-time scoring.
  • The junior currently sits 21st on the list with 1,042 points in her third season with the Flames.
  • She is currently on pace to surpass Jacquese Gilbert (1988-91) and Toni Stachon (1975-78) tied for 19th place at 1,071.
  • McCloud has led the team in scoring in 14 games this season for the Flames and currently is the second leading scorer this season at 12.3 PPG.
