Women’s Basketball Concludes Day Three at the WBI with a Victory Over Northern Illinois Sunday Afternoon

The Flames finish the season 19-17 overall.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The UIC women's basketball team's (19-17) season came to an end Sunday afternoon with a victory over Northern Illinois (16-17) in the final day of the Women's Basketball Invitational at the Clive M. Beck Center, 71-56.

The Flames finished seventh overall in their second appearance in the WBI in program history.

The Flames were led offensively by Josie Filer. The graduate transfer scored 22 points and grabbed six rebounds. Junior Jaida McCloud scored 16 points and had seven rebounds. Junior Kristian Young netted 13 points.

"The moment we arrived at that gym, I thought our energy was phenomenal," UIC head coach Ashleen Bracey said. "I think the girls really committed to that in the locker room and they carried that on the court for 40 minutes."

FIRST HALF
  • Josie Filer started strong from tip-off for the Flames, scoring seven of the 21 points in the first, going three-for-four from the charity stripe.
  • Sophomore Ky Dempsey-Toney landed a big block on Huskies leading scorer A'Jah Davis at the 2:30 mark in the first.
  • Senior Tiana Jackson and junior Kristian Young each hit three-pointers in the closing seconds of the first quarter to extend the Flames lead to nine to end the first quarter. Flames led, 21-12. 
  • The Flames scored 10 points in the second quarter behind the work of their frontcourt of Filer (six points) and Jaida McCloud (four points).
  • UIC continues to work with its interior as they outscored Northern Illinois in the paint, 18-10.
  • The Flames entered the half with a five-point lead over the Huskies, 31-25.
SECOND HALF
  • UIC started the second half on a 15-6 run heading into the media timeout.
  • The Flames outscored the Huskies in the third quarter, 19-17 on 43.8% shooting from the field.
  • In the closing minutes of the fourth quarter, McCloud scored her 16th point in the game, and moved up to 19th overall in all-time scoring at UIC with 1,072 points. She surpassed Jacquese Gilbert (1988-91) and Toni Stachon (1975-78) with her performance.
  • The Flames secured the victory after scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter and shooting 46% from the field.
  • Filer scored five points in the fourth quarter to finish with her fifth 20+ point of the game of the season.
The Flames close the season with a 19-17 record overall and a 10-13 record in their inaugural season in the Missouri Valley Conference. The women's program express gratitude to Flames fans for their support and dedication throughout the 2022-2023 season.
