UIC Falls in Late Inning Thriller Against Southern Illinois

The Flames Season Comes to an End at the 2023 MVC Softball Championship

CARBONDALE, Ill. – No.11 UIC came up short against No. 6 Southern Illinois in the opening round of the 2023 Missouri Valley Conference Softball Championship, as the Flames fell to the Salukis 2-0.

RECAP
  • The Flames bats came out hot in the first as senior Alannah Cran and junior Anna Walker hit back-to-back singles. After Walker stole second to put runners on second and third, Southern Illinois recorded two crucial outs to get out of the inning unscathed.
  • Starting her 28th game of the season, pitcher Christina Toniolo came out strong, retiring 11 straight Saluki batters between the first and fourth innings. The senior pitched the entire game in the circle, striking out two and allowing only four hits.
  • Four of those 11 outs between the first and fourth innings came off unassisted plays made by junior first baseman, and MVC All-Defensive Team recipient, Larisa Villa.
  • With the score still scoreless in the fifth, sophomore Grace Fleming poked a single into the centerfield grass for UIC's first hit since the first inning. However, the Flames were unable to get Fleming home.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, the Flames defense came up huge as sophomore Hailey Cowing rifled a ball from right field to third to get out a sliding Salukis runner to keep the game scoreless.
  • Cowing followed up her defensive play with a single in the top of the sixth, UIC's fourth and final hit of the evening.
  • After SIU got on the scoreboard with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth, the Flames weren't able to find the equalizer in the top of the seventh. The Salukis won 2-0 to advance to Thursday's quarterfinal round.
NEWS AND NOTES
  • Cran extended her hitting streak to 12 games going one-for-three in the game.
  • Toniolo threw the entire game for the Flames. She pitched 6.0 innings, striking out two, walking two on just four hits against the Salukis.
  • Cowing's throw from right field in the fifth was the 47th putout by the sophomore this season. She leads all UIC outfielders in that category.
  • Cran (34), Cowing (32) and Walker (30) are the only three members of the Flames to have 30+ hits in the 2023 season.
The UIC softball program would like to express its gratitude to Flames fans for their dedication and support throughout the 2023 season.
