Baseball Out-Slugged by Northwestern Tuesday Night

Flames Fall Short of Season-Sweep Against the Wildcats

CHICAGO – The UIC baseball team closed its season series against Northwestern at Curtis Granderson Stadium on Tuesday, putting its 2-0 season record against the Wildcats on the line. The Flames looked to build on their recent momentum as winners of four of their last five.

  • The Wildcats jumped out swinging early, tallying three runs in the first inning on a three-run home run from Stephen Hrustitch. The Wildcats tacked on four runs in the second inning to take a 7-0 lead heading into the third.
  • Charlie Szykowny started the comeback for UIC in the bottom of the third inning, driving in two runs with a line drive single up the middle.
  • A solo home run from Jackson Bessette in the home half of the fourth inning brought the Flames back within four at 7-3.
  • The Wildcats took control of the game in the top of the sixth inning, pushing seven runs across in the inning to take a 14-3 advantage.
  • The Flames would answer back in the bottom of the sixth, getting three runs on two bases loaded walks and a wild pitch, narrowing the gap to 14-6.
  • Northwestern would add on one more run in the seventh and another in the eighth to pull ahead 17-6.
  • Sean Dee launched a solo home run down the left field line in the bottom of the eighth, but it would not be enough to avoid the run rule, with the final score of 17-7.

The Flames return to Missouri Valley Conference play this weekend, as they welcome Belmont to Granderson Stadium for a three-game series. First pitch Friday night is set for 6:00 p.m. CT, with all three games available on ESPN+ and the Flames Network.
