Flames Baseball Season Comes to a Close

UIC Falls to Missouri State 5-0 in 2023 MVC Baseball Championship Elimination Game

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The UIC baseball program's season came to a close at the 2023 Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Championship, as the No. 6 Flames lost to No. 2 Missouri State 5-0 in an elimination game Thursday afternoon.

"I'm really proud of the guys for the fight they showed all year. We competed with a blue-collar mentality and that's what we want our identity to be moving forward."
 
RECAP
  • After both teams went scoreless over the first two innings, Missouri State got on the board first following a Zack Stewart two-run home run to right.
  • The UIC defense came through with multiple key stops in the middle part of the game. With the Bears up 3-0 in the fifth, pitcher Jeff Zack forced Missouri State's Cam Cratic to ground into the 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
  • In the top of the sixth, AJ Henkle showcased his defensive skills as the outfielder made a sliding one-handed catch against the wall in center to keep MSU's Cody Kelly off the base path.
  • Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Zack got the Missouri State batter to fly to right to end the inning.
  • The Bears tacked on two more runs in the top of the eighth and held off the Flames over the final two innings to come away with the victory. 
NEWS AND NOTES
  • The Flames finished the season with 28 wins. This is UIC's 22nd season in a row with 20 or more wins and fifth in a row with at least 28 wins, excluding the 2020 season which was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Jackson Bessette, Carson Roberts, Charlie Szykowny and Rayth Petersen recorded hits for the Flames.
  • Szykowny's double in the bottom of the sixth was his second extra-base hit of the tournament.
  • Robert's and Bessette's hits were their first hits of the 2023 MVC Baseball Championship.
  • Kade Lancour finished the afternoon throwing 64 pitches over 4.0 innings, allowing five hits and striking out two.
  • Jeff Zack added 3.1 innings in relief, allowing three hits.
  • Reece Lawler and Mark McCabe pitched the final 1.2 innings for the Flames.
