CHICAGO – An exciting season of exceptional promise and potential awaits fans at Credit Union 1 Arena in 2023-24 as the UIC basketball programs enter their second year in the Missouri Valley Conference. Season tickets are on sale now for both the men's and women's programs as the Flames host a challenging slate of non-conference contests along with key conference matchups.
Â
Fourth-year men's basketball head coach
Luke Yaklich will debut a talented roster in 2023-24, including nine new players and seven significant returners. A pair of starters — senior guard
Toby Okani (11.0 ppg., 7.1 rpg.) and junior forward
Filip Skobalj (7.7 ppg., team-high 61 three-pointers) — headline the returning Flames, while graduate student guard (and Chicago native)
Marquise Kennedy leads a dynamic incoming class that features six transfers. The Flames battled through a number of injuries last season, a campaign that was highlighted by seven wins at Credit Union 1 Arena, matching the most for the program during Yaklich's tenure.
"Playing in the heart of Chicago on campus at Credit Union 1 Arena is one of the things that makes our program truly unique," Yaklich said. "With a mix of new faces and key returners from last season, we are prepared for the challenge in our second season in The Valley. This season presents a wonderful opportunity to experience Chicago's College Team firsthand."
Â
The UIC women's basketball program is coming off a historic 2022-23 season that saw the Flames advance to the postseason for the third time in school history. UIC is looking to carry that momentum forward in head coach
Ashleen Bracey's second year at the helm with nine players returning, led by starting senior guards
Jaida McCloud (12.2 ppg., 6.2 rpg.) and
Kristian Young (6.2 ppg., 5.0 rpg.). UIC also has eight newcomers this year, including Chicago natives
Krystyna Ellew,
Keimari Rimmer and
Makiyah Williams, all of whom transferred into the program in the offseason.
Â
"Competing in front of the home crowd is always special for our program and we can't wait to make lasting memories with our fans at Credit Union 1 Arena this year," Bracey said. "We made strong strides in our first season in the Missouri Valley Conference and we are eagerly looking forward to continuing to build on last year's growth and take one step closer to bringing Chicago its first MVC women's basketball championship."
