Women’s Soccer Falls to Wisconsin on Sunday

An early Badgers goal the difference in the Flames’ first loss of 2023

MADISON, Wis. (Aug. 20, 2023) – The UIC women's soccer team fell 1-0 to Wisconsin Sunday afternoon. The Badgers aggressive offense proved to be difficult for the Flames as UIC moved to 0-1-1 on the season.

FIRST HALF
  • The Badgers controlled play for most of the first half, scoring their first goal in the 12th minute via an Ella Ottey header off a set piece.
  • Sara Sanabria, playing in her first match of the season, stopped one shot, as Wisconsin placed two shots on goal in the opening half.
  • The Flames' back line held strong throughout the half as the Badgers were called offsides five times across the first 45 minutes of the match. However, the Flames weren't able to capitalize on their possessions, finishing the half with no shots on goal.
SECOND HALF
  • The Flames struggled to keep the ball on the offensive end during the second half. UIC had its only shot on goal nearing 46 minutes of play as Sophia Jaime fired a shot on net.
  • Wisconsin continued to attack the Flames throughout the afternoon, totaling 15 shots with four being on goal.
  • Sanabria finished Sunday's contest with three saves.
COACH'S COMMENTS

"I am proud of the effort today," said head coach David Nikolic. "We made some changes tactically and it seemed to balance things as the game went on. Sanabria stepped into the starting 11 as goalkeeper and did very well. Due to the extreme heat, we went deep into the bench. The team is disappointed and gave it everything they had this afternoon, but now we have a week to prepare for our trip to Miami (OH)."
