CHICAGO (Sept. 10, 2023) – The UIC women's soccer team fell 2-1 to Maine Sunday in its last non-conference match of the regular season. Sophomore
Bella Baker (West Bend, Wis./West Bend) scored the Flames' lone goal of the afternoon. The Flames sit with a record of 1-4-2 heading into Missouri Valley Conference play.
COACH'S COMMENTS
"We struggled in the first half to maintain possession, which put us in a position where we had to chase the game," said head coach
David Nikolic. "In the second half, I felt that we created more quality chances and maintained pressure throughout the game. Unfortunately, two lapses on our part made the difference. We now have a week to prepare for the MVC season opener, and I am confident that the team will be well-prepared."
FIRST HALF
- Maine leading scorer, Abby Kraemer, gave her team the early 1-0 lead after scoring a goal at the 19th minute.
- Ten minutes later, the Black Bears looked to take advantage of another scoring opportunity, but Sara Sanabria (Wentzville, Mo./Holt) was there to clean it up.
- At the 38 minute mark, midfielder Makenna Maloy (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) launched a corner kick near the net. Baker was in position to place the header to back of the net to tie the match at 1-1. The goal was Baker's second of the season and her second home match in a row where she scored off a header via a corner kick. Baker currently leads the Flames in goals.
- Forward/midfielders Riley Collett (Fond du Lac, Wisc./Fond du Lac) and Sophia Jaime (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) fired two of the Flames' three shots on goal in the first half.
SECOND HALF
- After coming in at half for Sanabria, goalkeeper Trish Georgiou (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) stopped Maine's first scoring attempt of the half in the 52nd minute. The sophomore finished her first collegiate match with one save.
- Play began to get chippy in the second half, with three yellow cards being issued across the final 45 minutes. Both Maine and UIC were shown yellow cards in the first 16 minutes of the half.
- With UIC looking to take the lead, Makena Shaw (Fontana, Calif./Los Osos) and Chopper Carriere (Austin, Tex./Vandegrift) got good looks on net, but both shots missed.
- In the 69th minute, Kraemer scored her second goal of the afternoon to give Maine the 2-1 lead.
- With three minutes left in the match, the Flames had an opportunity to tie the score after the Black Bears were called for a foul inside the box. However, Maine goalkeeper Kira Kutzinski was able to make a diving save on the Sophia Jaime penalty kick to preserve the 2-1 victory.
