EVANSTON, Ill. (Sept. 11, 2023) – The UIC men's soccer team played its second consecutive road match Monday evening, as it took on its second Big Ten opponent of the year in Northwestern. After answering an early setback from the Wildcats, UIC was unable to keep up with Northwestern's offensive pace, and fell by a 4-1 final score.
COACH'S COMMENTS
"I was proud of how we bounced back early in the match," commented head coach
Sean Phillips. "We were fighting the elements out there, and credit to Northwestern for being ready to play from the opening whistle."
FIRST HALF
- The Wildcats jumped out to an incredibly early advantage in the match, as Justin Weiss put Northwestern ahead 1-0 just 64 seconds into the first half of play.
- Not to be deterred, the Flames answered back with an equalizer off the foot of Joshua Torres (Chicago, Ill. / St. Patrick) just three minutes later, his third of the young season.

Â
- After balanced play for the following 28 minutes, the Wildcats tallied a pair of goals just 69 seconds apart to carry a 3-1 lead into the halftime locker room.
- Oren Asher (Hetzliya, Israel / Rutgers) made three saves in the first half on nine Northwestern shots, the most the Flames have surrendered in a half since the first half of the season-opening match against NJIT.
Â
SECOND HALF
- An early challenge in the box from Melker Bjorndal (Gothenburg, Sweden) led to a Wildcats penalty kick in the 47th minute, and Justin Weiss stepped up and tallied his third goal of the match to put Northwestern ahead 4-1.
- The Flames were held without a shot for the first 23 minutes of the second half, after being held without a shot for the final 28 minutes of the first half.
- In a chippy final 20 minutes of the match, the Wildcats ratcheted down the defense, holding the Flames to by far the fewest shots in a match this season with just total.
- The Wildcats tallied two yellow cards in the match, with the Flames' Ezau Millan and Brauckmann both earning cautions in the contest. Â
UP NEXT
