Men's Tennis Completes River Forest Collegiate Invitational

Flames advanced to two singles and a doubles championship match prior to event being stopped due to weather

RIVER FOREST, Ill. (Sept. 17, 2023) – The UIC men's tennis program's inaugural invitational of the 2023 fall season was stopped on the second day of competition due to rain and weather in the area. The River Forest Collegiate Invitational announced it would be ending the event with no final matches taking place.

"The River Forest Collegiate Invitational was a perfect beginning to our fall season to see where we are with the rest of the competition in the area. Our guys competed hard and made progress. We are looking forward to getting back to practice this week."
 
SINGLES
  • At No. 2 singles, Randy Wilson (Miami, Fla./Florida Gulf Coast) defeated Chicago State's Rodrigo Alves (6-3, 6-3) in opening round competition before falling to Western Michigan's Ashton Adesoro (6-4, 6-0 (10-6)) in the semifinals. He was planning on taking on WashU's Eric Kuo in the third place match Saturday before the event stopped.
  • Edoardo Bottino (Genoa, Italy/Queens University) was one of two Flames who advanced to the singles championship matches for UIC at the event. Competing at No. 3 singles, the senior transfer defeated Eastern Illinois' John William Karlstad (6-3, 6-0) in the opening match and Saint Louis' Declan Townsend (6-4, 6-2) in the semifinals. Bottino was scheduled to take on Northern Illinois' Chris Norlin in the title match.
  • At No. 4 singles, Gustavo Schwebel (Salvador, Brazil/Colegio Antonio Vieira) defeated Eastern Illinois's Thomas Wallace (6-0, 6-2) in the opening round. Up 6-3, 3-0 in his semifinal match, WashU's John Fakouri retired due to injury resulting in the UIC senior advancing to the championship match. He was scheduled to Illinois State's Tin Ostro in finals.
  • At No. 5 singles Artem Iermolov fell to Illinois State's Saul Berdullas (6-0, 6-0) and Saint Louis' Adam Behun (7-6 (7-4), 6-3), while Elliott Dam (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) dropped matches to WashU's Nathan Tam (6-4, 6-1) and Western Michigan's Drew Evans (6-4, 6-4) at No. 6 singles.
 
DOUBLES
  • UIC's No. 3 doubles team of Schwebel and Iermolov defeated the Eastern Illinois No. 3 doubles pair (6-4) in the opening round and WashU's team (7-5) in the semifinals to advance to the championship match. The tandem fell to Illinois State's pair (6-3) in the finals to take second place. 
  • The No. 1 doubles pair of Aleksa Bucan (Belgrade, Serbia/Arkansas) and Randy Wilson fell to WashU in the opening round (6-1), before defeating Saint Louis' No. 1 pair (6-2) in its second round match. The team dropped its fifth-place match against the No. 1 doubles pair from Illinois State (6-3).
  • UIC's No. 2 doubles team of Bottino and Dam had hard fought efforts in all three of their matches, but ultimately weren't victorious against Illinois State (7-5), Northern Illinois (7-6 (9)) and Chicago State (6-3).

  • UIC will be back in action starting Friday at the Bellarmine Invitational.
  • The three-day event runs from Sept. 22-24 at the Eddie Weber Tennis Complex in Louisville, Ky.
