#25 UIC Men’s Soccer Rolls Past Drake, 4-0

Muns factors into all four goals as the Flames improve to 2-0 in MVC play

CHICAGO (Sept. 23, 2023) — Junior forward Bart Muns (Amsterdam, Netherlands/Santa Barbara CC) collected two goals and two assists as the No. 25 UIC men's soccer team stormed past Drake, 4-0, in its Missouri Valley Conference home opener on Saturday night before a season-high crowd of 1,049 fans at Flames Field.

Muns, who now has five goals in his last three matches, scored twice in the first 18 minutes of Saturday's win over Drake before setting up a highlight reel goal from redshirt senior midfielder Andres Moreno (Cicero, Ill./Morton East) in the 34th minute. Muns later claimed his second assist of the night on a goal by junior midfielder Oskar Greven (Cologne, Germany/Iowa Western CC) in the 72nd minute.

"We knew this would be a tough match for our guys with everything going on around us," commented head coach Sean Phillips referring to a very successful Flames Fest weekend at UIC, including the induction into the UIC Athletics Hall of Fame of former men's soccer standout Baggio Husidic. "The guys did everything we needed to do to get a win over a team that has given us trouble in the past."

FIRST HALF
  • The Flames jumped out to an early start, as Muns tallied his fourth goal of the season on a beautiful right-footed shot in the second minute to put the Flames ahead 1-0.
  • Just 16 minutes later, Muns found the ball at his feet in the box, and put away his fifth of the year to set the tone for the match and put UIC ahead 2-0.
  • Andres Moreno tallied a highlight reel goal in the 34th minute to give UIC a decided 3-0 advantage.
  • The Flames controlled the offensive pace for the first 45 minutes, owning a 6-3 shot advantage and a 3-0 lead at the halftime break.
SECOND HALF
  • After a back-and-forth beginning of the second half in which the Bulldogs went on the offensive, the Flames used a counter-attack in the 72nd minute to gain a 4-0 advantage on the strength of a Oskar Greven (Cologne, Germany/Iowa Western CC), his first tally of the season.
  • UIC went on to earn the 4-0 victory, its third consecutive and fourth in its last five matches.
