CHICAGO (Sept. 10, 2023) – The UIC women's soccer team put on a show at Flames Field for Senior Day against Drake as the Flames beat the Bulldogs 3-1 Sunday afternoon behind goals from
Emmy Higgins (Evansville, Ind./Castle),
Makenna Maloy (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville),
Katelyn Nardulli (Naperville, Ill./Xavier).
COACH'S COMMENTS
"I'm really happy for our seniors and the team as a whole. It's a special day for the seniors and we're grateful for their contributions to this program," said head coach
David Nikolic. "It alleviates a lot of pressure when we can secure early goals like we did. I'm content with the overall performance; we showed a lot of grit and a strong desire to secure this victory."
FIRST HALF
- The Flames came out swinging early against an undefeated Drake squad. Maloy positioned for a corner kick two minutes into the match, finding Higgins, who knocked it in. The Flames took an early lead.
- At the 11-minute mark, Drake evened the score with a goal from Maria Cervello.
- Makena Shaw (Fontana, Calif./Los Osos), Hannah Gryzik (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) and Valeria Da Silva (Yorba Linda, Calif. Yorba Linda) each took good shots to try extend the lead for the Flames, but were unable to find the back of the net.
- In the final five minutes of the half, Nardulli gave the Flames the 2-1 lead with her first goal of the season.
SECOND HALF
- Sophia Jaime (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) widened the scoring gap with a long-range shot 53 minutes into the match to give UIC the 3-1 lead.
- Jaime attempted another shot minutes later, but Drake's goalkeeper, Addie Ford, managed to save it.
- Sara Sanabria (Wentzville, Mo./Holt) returned to the net for UIC, making one save in 87 minutes of action.
- The second-half action was heated, as five of seven yellow cards were issued in the final 45 minutes of play.
- The Flames were able to keep the Bulldogs off the board for the entirety of the second half to preserve the 3-1 victory and win their second MVC contest of the season.
FIRST TIMERS
- Katelyn Nardulli's goal at the end of the first half marked the junior midfielder's first collegiate goal.
- Sunday's goal from midfielder Emmy Higgins was also the first of her collegiate career. Higgins was recently named MVC Freshman of the Week.
SENIOR DAY CELEBRATION
- Sunday's contest marked UIC's annual Senior Day celebration.
- The Flames honored Lauren Keiser (Santa Rosa Beach, Fla./South Walton), Makena Shaw, Kathryn Rutledge (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) and Shelsea Rigby (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) prior to the match against Drake.

The Flames will return to Flames Field on Thursday for another Missouri Valley Conference matchup against Murray State. The contest begins at 6 p.m. and can be streamed on ESPN+, with live stats also available on the Flames' website.
