Women’s Soccer Draws Sunday Afternoon Against Kansas City

Madison Ferris Scored her First Goal in the 1-1 Draw

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Sept. 3, 2023) – The UIC women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against Kansas City, bringing its record to 1-2-2. Madison Ferris scored her first colligate goal to even the score for the Flames on Sunday.

COACH'S COMMENTS
"I'm proud of the way we fought back. We showed resilience and persistence to secure the tie today, as obtaining a result on the road is always challenging," said head coach David Nikolic. "While we pressed for a decisive goal, it was Sara Sanabria's excellent individual effort at the end that ultimately secured the tie. Now, our focus shifts to Thursday, as that is our top priority."

FIRST HALF
  • Kansas City set the tone early with their first shot of the game. The Roos let off an attempt, but Sara Sanabria was there to clean it up.
  • At the 12 minute mark, Makena Shaw got a clean look at the goal, but it was stopped by Kansas City goalkeeper Riley Moore.
  • The ensuing counterattack by Kansas City led to a goal from Kayda Kamolz, putting the Flames down 1-0 12 minutes into the contest.
 
SECOND HALF
  • Makena Shaw kept the pressure on the Roos' goalkeeper, firing a shot on goal that was turned aside in the 56th minute.
  • With about 22 minutes left to play, a corner kick for UIC lead to a Madison Ferris goal, assisted from Sophia Jaime.
  • Sara Sanabria grabbed two clutch saves in the last ten minutes of play to keep the score even.

FIRST TIMERS
  • Madison Ferris' goal was the first of her collegiate career. The redshirt sophomore comes off the bench for the Flames, playing 135 minutes this season.

 UP NEXT
The Flames (1-2-2) return to Chicago Thursday to take on DePaul at Wish Field. The contest begins at 4 p.m. and can be streamed on FloSports, with live stats also available on the Flames' website.
