Danyel Middleton (Chicago, Ill./Bolingbrook/Marquette) both led the Flames with 13 points in the victory.
SCOUTING NORTHERN IOWA
Facing a difficult non-conference schedule, Northern Iowa struggled to find a win at the beginning of the season and currently has a 6-11 overall record. The Panthers faced several established opponents in the first two months of the season, earning a victory over Green Bay (78-67), but taking losses to No. 3 Iowa (94-53), Syracuse (71-54), Vanderbilt (68-64), Creighton (115-64) and Iowa State (87-70).
In their first conference matchup, the Panthers narrowly lost to Missouri State, 54-52, but rebounded with victories over Evansville (82-52), Indiana State (85-79), Valparaiso (76-52), Murray State (95-75) and Bradley (105-59) to improve to 5-3 in the Valley. UNI has also recently fell to Belmont (72-67) and Illinois State (88-77).
Junior forward Grace Boffeli leads the team in scoring, averaging 15.2 points per game. She's also the top rebounder, grabbing eight boards per game. Classmate Maya McDermott is UNI's second-leading scorer (14.9 ppg) and she leads the nation in free throw percentage (.955 - 42-of 44).
UIC and Northern Iowa met three times last season, most recently in the quarterfinals of the 2023 MVC Tournament (Hoops in the Heartland) in Moline, Ill., with the Panthers winning 73-57.
