Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Flames Back To Winning Form with 2-0 Victory over Illinois State

Camryn Ries scores the first two goals of her career to help UIC fly past the Redbirds.

CHICAGO (Oct. 20, 2024) — Sophomore forward Camryn Ries (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) picked the perfect time to score the first two goals of her collegiate career, bookending halftime with her brace as the UIC women's soccer team (6-9-2, 5-2-2 MVC) picked up a critical 2-0 Missouri Valley Conference win over Illinois State on Sunday afternoon at Flames Field. With the victory, the Flames would appear to have clinched a top-four seed for the MVC Tournament, earning at least a first-round bye with one conference game to go.

Ries opened the scoring in the 43rd minute, settling a cross from senior forward Kristiana Pappanastos (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg/Illinois State) and burying a 15-yard shot into the upper left corner of the net.  Just over five minutes into the second half (50:40), Ries doubled the advantage, collecting the ball near the top left of the penalty area and weaving through traffic towards the center before driving a low shot back across the grain and inside the left post. Graduate student goalkeeper Francesca Faraci (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South/Florida) came up with three saves to record her fifth solo shutout of the season.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • UIC finishes the home portion of its MVC schedule undefeated and unblemished, going 4-0-1 in their five conference games and outscoring their opponents at Flames Field, 8-0.  In their three seasons in the Missouri Valley Conference, the Flames are 11-1-3 at home and have outscored their conference foes, 18-4, in those games (the one blemish was a 3-0 loss to Missouri State on Oct. 1, 2023).
  • The Flames take a 3-2 lead in the all-time series with Illinois State and have won all three matchups with the Redbirds since UIC joined the Valley in 2022.
  • Camryn Ries is the second UIC player to score two goals in a game this season. Riley Collett also picked up a brace in the Flames' Valley opener, a 2-0 win over UNI on Sept. 19 at Flames Field.
  • Of UIC's 12 goals in MVC games this year, eight have been the first goal of the season for the scorer — Riley Collett (UNI), Makenna Maloy (Murray State), Madison Ferris, Hannah Gryzik and Amina Marin (Indiana State), Kamryn Brickman (Evansville), Elizabeth Weinberg (Missouri State) and Camryn Ries (Illinois State). The Flames' other four goals in conference play have also been scored by Collett (UNI and Belmont), Ferris (Missouri State) and Ries (Illinois State).
  • Kristiana Pappanastos recorded her first collegiate assist (and point) with the helper on Ries' first goal on Sunday. Coincidentally, Pappanastos got her assist against Illinois State, where she played two seasons for the Redbirds (2021-22) before transferring to UIC prior to last year.
  • With 5.5 total shutouts this season, Francesca Faraci moves into third place on the UIC single-season goalkeeper shutout list, passing Kelly Fritz (five in 2015). The only players with more clean sheets in one season at UIC are Faraci's current teammate, Lauren Keiser (eight in 2022) and Lena Kurz (10.5 in 2019).

UP NEXT
UIC will wrap up the 2024 regular season and MVC play Thursday with a 7 p.m. (CT) road game at Valparaiso. The matchup will be televised live on ESPN+.
