Swimming and Diving Opens Missouri Valley Conference Competition Against Southern Illinois Saturday

Flames and Salukis set to battle it out in dual meet fashion.

Carbondale, Ill. (Oct. 25, 2024) UIC swimming and diving is back in the water this weekend, as they prepare to take on Southern Illinois at Shea Natatorium in Carbondale, Ill. Events are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. (CT).

Scouting Southern Illinois
 
  • Saturday will be the Salukis' third meet of the year, and second meet in a row facing a conference opponent. The women's team collected a win against Missouri State (246-107), when the men's team fell short against the Bears (200-151).
  • The women's trio of Celia Pulido, Liseka Gallegos Gutierrez, and Brookyln Anderson swept the podium in the 100 yard backstroke for the Salukis against Missouri State. Senior swimmer Alex Santiagio won the men's 50 yard freestyle last weekend against the Bears with a time 20.44

  • On the women's side the Flames dominated the distance events with the trio of junior Madison Helmick (Bingham Farms, Mich./Birmingham Groves), sophomore Molly Kroeger (Easton, Md./Easton), and freshman Karolena Shaw (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Indian Hills) dominated the competition, going one, two, three in both the 1000 and 500-yard freestyle events.
  • For the men sophomore James McCarthy (Minnetonka, Minn./DeLaSalle) had a strong opening meet winning both the 200-yard breaststroke (2:08.03) and the 200-yard individual medley (IM) in a time of 1:56.05Diving
  • UIC dive picked up right where they left off on the men's side with junior Harrison Nolan and senior Cole Tremewan going one two in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dive competitions.
  • Junior Kerry-Leigh Morrison (Gauteng, South Africa/St. Mary's School) had a strong showing on the diving board, placing third (243.15 points) on the one-meter and fourth (232.05 points) on the three-meter diving boards. Fellow junior Kathryn Kleczka (Franklin, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels) also had top five finishes in both events, placing fourth on the one-meter (229.43 points) and fifth on the three-meter (227.02 points) diving events.
