Non-Conference Road Contests Await Men's Tennis

The Flames take on Cleveland State Friday at 9 a.m. and Duquesne Saturday at 3 p.m,.

CHICAGO (Feb. 15, 2024) – After playing three of its last four contests at home, the UIC men's tennis program (2-3) leaves Illinois for the first time in nearly a home, as the Flames head on the road to Ohio and Pennsylvania for matches at Cleveland State (6-2) and Duquesne (4-1).
 
Friday's competition will start at 9 a.m. CT from the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion in Cleveland, while Saturday's match will start at 3 p.m. CT from Alpha Tennis and Fitness of Pittsburgh.

SCOUTING CLEVELAND STATE
  • The Vikings enter Friday morning's contest with a 6-2 record and are winners of five of their last six matches.
  • Cleveland State swept the weekly Horizon League awards for the fourth straight week this past week, as the league named senior Kade Mindry its Singles Player of the Week and senior Juandedios Abboud and sophomore Carl Gedlitschk its Doubles Team of the Week.
  • Gedlitschka and freshman Lincoln Battle and are both undefeated in dual matches in 2024 with 6-0 records.
  • This will be the 29th meeting in the last 20 years between the Flames and Vikings.
SCOUTING DUQUESNE
  • The Dukes are 4-1 in 2024 and are riding a four-match win streak. Duquesne has won its past two matches via 7-0 sweeps.
  • Graduate student Jin Dassanayake is currently 5-0 for the Dukes at No. 2 singles and is one of two Duquesne student-athletes to remain unbeaten on the year, along with senior Kaipo Marshall (3-0). 
LAST MATCH
  • UIC earned the 5-2 victory over IUPUI last Sunday at the XS Tennis Village.
  • The Jaguars took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. UIC's No. 2 pair of Robinson Le Meur (Evreux, France/Sciences Po Bordeaux) and Aleksa Bucan (Belgrade, Serbia/Arkansas) had a 5-2 lead in their match, but it did not finish due to IUPUI already securing the doubles point.
  • In the singles competition, the Flames showed their grit, winning three of their five matches in three sets.
  • At No. 1 singles, Randy Wilson (Miami, Fla./Florida Gulf Coast) won in three sets to secure his third singles victory of the year.
  • Bucan performed strong again at the No. 2 singles spot, shutting out his opponent 6-0 in straight sets. He has four singles wins in 2024.
  • Le Meur continued his dominance at the No. 3 spot, winning his match in three sets. The sophomore is currently on a four-match win streak.
UIC ON THE ROAD
  • This weekend's contests will be UIC's fourth and fifth road matches of the 2024 season.
  • The Flames are currently winless in away competitions this season.
  • UIC is scheduled to play six more regular season road contests following this weekend's action.
