CHICAGO (Feb. 29, 2024) – After being off last week, the UIC men's tennis program is back in action this week with a Friday road contest at Marquette (2-8) and a home match against Illinois State (7-5).
Friday's action will start at 6 p.m. at the Helfaer Tennis & Recreation Center. The contest in Milwaukee is the second match of a UIC men's and women's tennis doubleheader against the Golden Eagles. Sunday's contest against the Redbirds will take place at 12 p.m. at the XS Tennis Village.
SCOUTING MARQUETTE
- The Golden Eagles enter Friday's contest with a 2-8 record on the season. Marquette went 1-7 throughout February, with its only win coming against Eastern Illinois (4-2). The program lost both matches on the road last weekend at North Dakota (5-2) and against Montana (5-2).
- Blake Roegner is on a three-match win streak for Marquette, competing at the No. 1 singles positions this season, while Jasper Schaadt has won his last two matches at the No. 4 singles spot.
- Last season the Flames defeated the Golden Eagles 4-1 in Milwaukee. The victory halted a 14-match win streak by Marquette dating back to 2006.
- Each of the last 16 contests between the two programs have taken place in Milwaukee.
SCOUTING ILLINOIS STATE
- Illinois State is 7-5 on the season with victories against Marquette (7-0), Eastern Illinois (7-0) and Bellarmine (4-3).
- The Redbirds have won four of their last six contests, but three of those matches have been against non-Division 1 programs.
- Last season, the Flames fell to the Redbirds 6-1 in a January contest.
- Illinois State's Tomas Valencia is currently on an eight-match win streak in singles competition competing primarily at the No. 6 spot. His last loss was at No. 24 Oklahoma on Jan. 21.
FLAMES' FANTASTIC FEBRUARY
- The Flames concluded February with a 4-1 record. The team's only loss came on the road at Northwestern, who currently sits No. 49 in the ITA Men's Tennis team rankings.
- All four of UIC's wins in February were by a 5-2 score, with three of the Flames' wins coming on the road.
- Robinson Le Meur (Evreux, France/Sciences Po Bordeaux) and Edoardo Bottino (Genoa, Italy/Queens University) were both undefeated in singles competition throughout the month, at the Nos. 3 and 4 singles spots respectively.
- The Mid-American Conference named Le Meur and Aleksa Bucan (Belgrade, Serbia/Arkansas) its Men's Tennis Singles Player of the Week during February. It is the first time in at least five years more than two Flames men's tennis players have received a conference weekly honor in the same month.
SWEET HOME CHICAGO
- The Flames are a perfect 3-0 in home contests in 2024.
- UIC has earned 17 team points, while dropping only four team points in the three matches held at the XS Tennis Village.
