Strong Singles Performances Propel Men’s Tennis Past Marquette

The Flames won five singles matches in a 5-2 victory over the Golden Eagles

MILWAUKEE (March 1, 2024) – The UIC men's tennis program (6-3) extended its win streak to four, as the Flames dominated their singles matches against Marquette en route to a 5-2 victory Friday evening.
 
The Flames won four of their five singles contests in straight sets against the Golden Eagles. UIC has won six of its last seven matches and three in a row on the road.

MATCH RECAP
  • After dropping the doubles point to Marquette, the Flames came out firing in the singles competition. At No. 1 singles, Randy Wilson (Miami, Fla./Florida Gulf Coast) needed three sets but came away with his fifth victory of the season.
  • Competing at the No. 3 singles spot for the first time in his UIC career, Aleksa Bucan (Belgrade, Serbia/Arkansas) cruised past his Marquette opponent for the straight-sets victory.
  • At No. 4 singles, Edoardo Bottino (Genoa, Italy/Queens University) continued his dominance, winning in straight-sets. The senior is on a seven-match win streak and remains perfect competing at No. 4 singles with a 7-0 record.
  • Mihailo Savic (Smederevska Palanka, Serbia/Sportska Gimnazija) won his first-career singles match competing at the No. 5 position, taking down his opponent in straight-sets.
  • Gustavo Schwebel (Salvador, Brazil/Colegio Antonio Vieira) won his second match in a row after defeating Marquette's Ivan Vazquez in straight-sets.
 NEWS AND NOTES
  • The Flames have won two matches in a row against the Golden Eagles. UIC previously lost 14 straight contests to Marquette prior to its current win streak.
  • UIC's last four matches have been 5-2 victories and the Flames' past five wins have been by a 5-2 score.
  • Four of UIC's five singles victories Friday were in straight-sets.
  • The No. 3 doubles pair of Bucan and Robinson Le Meur's (Evreux, France/Sciences Po Bordeaux) has been dominant recently, with the duo winning their last four matches. Bucan and Le Meur won 6-4 Friday.
  • Bottino and Bucan are tied for the team lead with seven singles victories on the season.
  • Friday's competition was Le Meur's first this season competing at the No. 2 singles position. He was 6-1 so far in 2024 at the No. 3 singles spot.

UP NEXT
  • The Flames return to action Sunday when the host Illinois State at 12 p.m. at the XS Tennis Village.
  • Illinois State is 7-5 on the season with victories against Marquette (7-0), Eastern Illinois (7-0) and Bellarmine (4-3).
  • The Redbirds have won four of their last six contests, but three of those matches have been against non-Division 1 programs.
  • Last season, the Flames fell to the Redbirds 6-1 in a January contest.
  • Illinois State's Tomas Valencia is currently on an eight-match win streak in singles competition competing primarily at the No. 6 spot. His last loss was at No. 24 Oklahoma on Jan. 21.
  • The Flames are a perfect 3-0 in home contests in 2024.
