CHICAGO (March 14, 2024) – The UIC baseball team (10-6, 0-0 MVC) opened up a three-game series at Curtis Granderson Stadium Friday, as SIUE (5-13, 0-0 OVC) traveled to Chicago. The Flames entered the game on a five-game winning streak, their longest such streak of the 2024 season so far. In a back-and-forth contest on a chilly evening in Chicago, the Flames lost the lead in the final two innings and fell by a final score of 11-8.

GAME SUMMARY
- The Flames took an early lead for the ninth time this season, as Zane Zielinski (Chicago, Ill./Northeast CC) led the bottom of the first inning off with a triple to right field and would be brought home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of AJ Taylor (Downers Grove, Ill./College of DuPage) to give UIC a 1-0 lead. The Flames entered the game 6-2 when scoring the game's first run this year.
- Zielinski kept a hot bat his next time up to the plate in the bottom of the second inning, as his second hit of the game drove home the Flames' second run of the contest to give them a 2-0 lead after two innings.

- The Cougars would answer back in the top of the third inning, cutting the deficit in half on an infield single and a Flames throwing error.
- AJ Henkle (Huntley, Ill./McHenry County College) tripled the Flames' advantage in the home half of the third inning, as his second triple of the year brought home Kendal Ewell (Calumet City, Ill./Kentucky) and Jackson Bessette (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) to put the Flames ahead 4-1.

- After the Cougars tied the game in the top of the fourth, the Flames answered back in the bottom of the inning, plating a pair of runs on RBI doubles from Bessette and Ewell.

- The Cougars took another lead in the sixth and seventh innings, running up a 7-6 advantage before Zielinski launched his third home run of the season to left-center field to take the lead 8-7 in the bottom of the seventh.

- SIUE struck for four runs in the top of the eighth inning and were able to hold off the Flames in their final two at-bats, taking the series opener by a final score of 11-8. The loss is UIC's first at Granderson Stadium this season and first in a true night game (starting after 3 p.m. local time).

The Flames and Cougars will round out their three-game series on Saturday afternoon, as the two will play a double-header at Curtis Granderson Stadium, beginning at 1 p.m. CT. The series was originally scheduled to conclude with a single game on Sunday afternoon but has been moved to a double-header Saturday due to cold weather in the Chicago area.
