ATHENS, OHIO (March 2, 2024) – The UIC baseball team (5-4, 0-0 MVC) opened a three-game series at Ohio (2-5, 0-0 MAC) Saturday, as the two teams played a nine-inning double-header at Bob Wren Stadium.
COACH'S COMMENTS
Â
GAME 1
- The Flames used the big fly to jump out to an early lead in game one of Saturday's double-header, as AJ Henkle (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) launched his first home run of the season to left-center field in the top of the second inning, giving UIC a 1-0 lead. Zane Zielinski (Chicago, Ill./Lake View) followed the Henkle home run an inning later, giving the Flames a 3-0 advantage with a two-run home run, also his first of the 2024 season. UIC added a fourth run in the third on a bases-loaded walk to Pambos Nicoloudes (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central).
- AJ Henkle would not be satisfied with just the one home run, as he would launch his second of the game in the top of the fifth inning, giving the Flames a 5-0 lead.
Â
Â
- The five runs would be more than enough for UIC in game one, as Dillon Schueler (Rock Falls, Ill./Sauk Valley CC) had a strong outing on the mound, going seven scoreless innings before passing it off to the bullpen. Rigel Verciglio (Chicago, Ill./UTRGV) pitched two solid innings in relief, closing the door on a 5-0 UIC victory.
Â
GAME 2
- The Bobcats were the ones to use the big fly early on in game two, as a two-run home run from Ohio's right fielder in the home half of the first inning gave OU a 2-0 lead early on starting pitcher Brandon Bak (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North).
- The Flames answered back with a run of their own in the top of the third, as Jackson Bessette (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) reached on a Bobcats error, bringing home Zielinski to cut the deficit to one at 2-1.
- UIC would tie the game in the top half of the seventh inning as AJ Henkle drove in his fourth run of the day on an RBI groundout to tie the game at 2-2.
- The Bobcats answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the seventh, and the Flames were unable to answer back in their final two at-bats, stranding ten runners on base in the game, and dropping the second game by a 3-2 final score.
