Baseball Outlasts Purdue in Historic Victory Wednesday

Flames Topple Boilermakers, Increase Win Streak to Three Games

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (March 20, 2024) – The UIC baseball team (13-6, 0-0 MVC) opened a four-game road trip Wednesday night, as it traveled to Purdue (15-7, 0-0 Big Ten) for a mid-week matchup in Lafayette. In the longest game ever played at Alexander Field in terms of innings and time, the Flames earned a gritty 6-5 win.

COACH'S COMMENTS

GAME SUMMARY
  • The Flames got off to a fast start on a cold evening in Indiana, as UIC struck for three runs, highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of Kendal Ewell (Calumet City, Ill./Kentucky).

  • Flames starter Vincent Trapani (Eau Claire, Wis./Arkansas) pitched out of trouble in both of his innings pitched, and kept the Boilermakers off the board, maintaining the 3-0 lead for UIC.
  • UIC added to its lead in the top of the fourth inning as four straight walks gave the Flames a 4-0 advantage. The Boilermakers drew closer in the bottom of the fourth, as a solo home run on the first pitch of the frame to cut the lead to 4-1.
  • The Boilermakers scored the next three runs of the game, culminating in the game's tying run being scored in the bottom of the ninth inning.
  • After trading zeroes for four innings in extras, the Flames were able to put up two runs in the top of the 14th inning, thanks in part to RBI singles from AJ Henkle (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) and Jackson Bessette (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin).

  • Colin Hawkins (St. Louis, Mo./Rend Lake College) was outstanding in extended relief, pitching five complete innings and earning the victory.
