Women’s Tennis Hosts Valparaiso in Regular Season Finale

The Flames will honor their three-member senior class prior to Sunday’s 1 p.m. match

CHICAGO (April 19, 2024) – The UIC women's tennis program (8-12, 4-3 MVC) concludes its 2024 regular season Sunday with a Missouri Valley Conference clash against Valparaiso (10-11, 1-5 MVC) at 1 p.m. at the Flames Outdoor Tennis Courts.
 
The Flames will honor their three-member senior class prior to Sunday's match, with the Senior Day festivities starting at 12:30 p.m.
 
SCOUTING VALPARAISO
  • Valparaiso is currently 10-11 on the season and 1-5 in MVC play. The Beacons host Murray State Saturday afternoon. The program is 1-5 in away contests this season.
  • The Flames are currently fourth in the MVC standings while the Beacons are in eighth-place.
  • UIC leads the all-time series against Valparaiso 21-3. The Flames are on a 14-match win streak against the Beacons dating back to 2008.
LAST MATCH RECAP
  • UIC concluded its two-match road swing with a 5-2 loss against Missouri Valley Conference leader Murray State last Sunday.
  • The Flames won the doubles point with victories by the No. 2 doubles team of Tamara Malazonia (Birmingham, United Kingdom/St. Paul's School for Girls) and Camille Belberka (Saint-Denis-lès-Bourg, France Seward County Community College (Kan.) and the No. 3 doubles tandem of Zara Ryan (Dublin, Ireland/Utah State) and Paula Rodriguez Gregoris (Canary Islands, Spain International School of Berne).
  • After Murray State won singles matches at the Nos. 1 and 5 positions to take a 2-1 lead in the team score, Belberka defeated Murray State's Varya Alexeyeva in straight sets to tie the match at 2-2. The victory was the junior's team-leading tenth singles win this season.
  • Murray State would win the final three singles matches to come away with the 5-2 victory.
NEWS AND NOTES
  • UIC's three-member senior class includes Agnes Gustafsson (Paris, France/Akademi Båstad Gymnasium), Tamara Malazonia (Birmingham, United Kingdom/St. Paul's School for Girls) and Zara Ryan (Dublin, Ireland/Utah State).
  • The trio has combined for 228 victories (106 singles, 122 doubles) during their time in Chicago.
  • Malazonia and Belberka have a team-high 13 doubles wins in 2024 and are on a 11-match win streak dating back to Feb. 10.
  • UIC has won the doubles point in every conference competition this season.
  • The Flames are currently tied for third in the MVC standings with the top-six programs making the 2024 MVC Women's Tennis Championship. A win against Valparaiso clinches a spot in next week's tournament for the Flames.
  • Sunday's match is UIC's first match at the Flames Outdoor Tennis Courts this season. The program is 6-1 at the Flames Outdoor Tennis Courts over the last five seasons and is on a three-match win streak when competing at its home outdoor courts.
