EVANSVILLE, Ind. (May 23, 2024) – Fifth-seeded UIC baseball continued play in the 2024 Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Championship Thursday, as the Flames took on the no. 2 seed Murray State. In a game originally scheduled for Wednesday night, the Flames jumped ahead early and never looked back, cruising to a 12-2 victory in seven innings and remaining in the winner's bracket heading into Friday.
Â
GAME SUMMARY
- UIC got on the board first, as the Flames pushed across two in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly and a Racers throwing error to take a 2-0 lead.
- After Murray State answered for one in the bottom of the first, UIC expanded its lead in the top of the second inning, striking for five runs thanks in part to a Ryan Nagelbach (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) three-run home run to take a 7-1 advantage.
Â
Â
- The Flames got one in the third inning, and added another three in the fourth thanks to RBI doubles from Garrett Kay (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) and Jackson Bessette (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) to take control of the game at 11-2.
Â
Â
Â
- Weather entered the picture in the top of the fifth inning, as lightning in the area forced a nearly two-hour delay at German American Bank Field.
- The Flames added a run in the top of the seventh inning, and went on to win 12-2 by mercy rule in seven innings.
Â
The Flames remain in the winner's bracket after Thursday's victory and will take on no. 3 Evansville on Friday at either 11 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. CT depending on whether all of the scheduled games on Thursday night are played to completion or not.
