CHICAGO (May 28, 2024) – Along with their excellence on the fields of competition, UIC scholar-athletes consistently sustain greatness in the classroom, a standard that continued with the recently-completed Spring 2024 semester, with the Flames registering a 3.35 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) that is among the highest semester marks in school history.
 
"We are incredibly proud of the sustained academic excellence of Flames scholar-athletes over the past decade," said director of athletics Michael Lipitz. "Their record-setting grade-point averages and graduation rates in recent years reflect their collective commitment in the classroom and focus on preparing for their lives after college. We offer our special thanks to the faculty, counselors, advisors, coaches and staff who support our scholar-athletes each and every year."
 
Approximately 20 percent (59) of UIC's 300 scholar-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 GPA, while nearly half (139) were named to the Dean's List after posting a 3.5 GPA or higher. Well over two-thirds (211) of all UIC scholar-athletes completed this past semester with a 3.0 GPA and were named Flames Scholar-Athletes for their accomplishments in the classroom.
 
Epitomizing the combination of academic and athletic excellence, UIC has produced 18 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District selections to date during the 2023-24 academic year, with honorees for baseball and track & field still to come. A total of 19 Flames have earned a place on their respective sport's 2023-24 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Scholar-Athlete Teams, with selections still pending for baseball and track & field.
 
Once more, all 18 Flames programs finished with a 3.0 GPA or higher during the Spring 2024 semester, helping UIC Athletics extend its streak to 20 consecutive semesters with a department GPA of 3.0 or higher.
 
The UIC women's golf team led all Flames programs with a 3.78 GPA during the Spring 2024 term, while the Flames' men's tennis team topped all UIC men's programs with a 3.54 GPA last semester.
 
"It's always inspiring to see our scholar-athletes excel both in the classroom and on the field," added Karen Dixon, associate athletics director for academic services. "Their dedication to both academics and athletics exemplifies the true spirit of excellence and determination that defines our athletics department and UIC."
 
Back in October, UIC Athletics proudly announced an all-time high 93% Graduation Success Rate (GSR) for its scholar-athletes. The Flames are expected to show similar broad-based academic success when the NCAA releases its annual Academic Progress Rate (APR) figures in the coming weeks.
