Volleyball Opens Two-Match Homestand Thursday Night

Flames slated to host Bowling Green and Brown in non-conference action.

CHICAGO (Sept. 11, 2024) – The UIC volleyball team (5-1, 0-0 MVC) returns home to Credit Union 1 Arena for the first time during the 2024 season, hosting Bowling Green (3-3, 0-0 MAC) Thursday at 5 p.m. (CT), followed by Brown (2-1, 0-0 IVY) Saturday at 1 p.m. (CT).

All home matches take place at Credit Union 1 Arena, doors open one hour prior to first serve, and admission is free to the public.
 
SCOUTING BOWLING GREEN
 
  • The Falcons have posted a .500 record so far in the 2024 season, with wins over Chicago State, UMBC and Wright State.
  • The Flames trail the Falcons in the overall series, 6-4. However, the Flames won the past two meetings dating back to August 2017.
  • Junior Lauyrn Hovey leads the attack for the Falcons this season, tallying 62 kills in 19 sets played, averaging 3.26 kills per set.
 
SCOUTING BROWN
  • The Brown Bears are coming a 2-1 showing in the Ocean State Cup in Smithfield, R.I. this past weekend. They collected back-to-back wins against Bryant and Rhode Island.
  • This will be the first time UIC is set to clash against Brown on the volleyball court in program history.
  • In only 12 sets played, junior Mariia Sidorova has already tallied 44 kills, averaging 4.29 kills per set.
 
LEATHERNECK CLASSIC RECAP
 
  • The Flames finished out the Leatherneck Classic going 2-1 with wins against Purdue Fort Wayne and Western Illinois.
  • In the win against the Leathernecks, four Flames hit double-digit kills: graduate student Zahria Woodard (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest), senior Kayanna Jones (Normal, Ill./Normal West) and junior Cleo Lorenzo (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Elite) each collected a dozen kills. Sophomore Za' Niya Boyles (Columbia, S.C./ Gray Collegiate Academy) tallied 10 kills in the win.
  • In the win against the Mastodons Friday night, sophomore libero Hannah Howard (Toledo, Ohio/Eastern Michigan/Saint Ursula Academy) collected a 21-dig performance in the four-set victory.
 
FLAMES FACTS
 
  • Woodard boasts a .524 hitting percentage, which leads the Flames, the Missouri Valley Conference and ranks 5th in NCAA Division I.
  • The Flames rank second in the top three in kills (14.04), assists (13.08) and blocks (2.08) per set in the MVC.
  • This will be the Flames second season playing home matches at Credit Union 1 Arena. A season ago, the Flames posted an 11-5 record in front of the home crowd.
