Swimming travels to Valparaiso for Friday Dual Meet

Flames set compete in their second straight road meet.

VALPARAISO, Ind. (Jan. 30, 2025) – The UIC swimming and diving team aims to find a win on the road in their first dual-meet against Valparaiso since 2022. The swimming team will be the only ones traveling for the dual meet, with Valparaiso not having a diving team.

SCOUTING VALPARAISO
  • This will be the 14th meeting for the men and 15th meeting for the women against Valparaiso, with both programs having unblemished records. Three seasons ago, both the men (160-93) and women (199-59) won in dominant fashion against the Beacons.
  • In the meet, UIC's women won every event and the men won all events but one. Graduate student Taira Juronis (Palos Hills, Ill./Amos Alonzo Stagg) won the 100 breaststroke and the 400 individual medley, and senior Luke Wiesner (Chicago, Ill./West Chicago Community) recorded his first career wins in the 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke.
  • In its last meet, Valparaiso's men placed third, while the women placed fourth in the Butler Invitational.
 
 
MEET RECAP - MISSOURI STATE
Swimming
  • Freshman Georgina Bell (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington Girls College) earned Missouri Valley Conference Women's Freshman of the Week honors after competing in six events. Bell placed second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:01.73, as well as being a member of three second place finishing relay teams in the 400 medley (3:48.76), 200 freestyle (1:36.65) and 200 medley (1:43.99).
  • Sophomore Jack Mills (Toronto, Ontario/Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute) set a Hammons Student Center Pool record on his way to winning the 1,650 freestyle (15:44.07). Mills also placed first in the 500 freestyle (4:33.96)
  • Juronis collected four second place finishes in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.79), 200 breaststroke (2:17.43), 200 medley relay (1:43.99) and 400 medley relay (3:48.76).
  • Graduate student Rafe Dolan Peterson (Austin, Minn./Austin/Green Bay) collected a win in the 100 Freestyle, finishing in 44.99 seconds.
  • Sophomore Sophie Stefanac (Fenton, Mich./Fenton) finished second in the 100 backstroke (57.31) and third in the 200 backstroke (2:02.82) with a new personal record.
