Women’s Soccer Defeated by SIU Following Early Goal

Flames fall to Salukis 1-0

Carbondale, Ill. – For their fourth conference match of the season, the Flames headed south to take on the Southern Illinois Salukis. Undefeated at home, the Salukis (9-2-2, 3-1 MVC) scored early in the 5th minute of action to take the lead over the Flames (4-6-3, 0-2-2 MVC). Through the remainder of the game, the Flames would have their chances, recording nine shots, but were unable to find the back of the net. In the end, the Salukis' 5th-minute goal would be the game-winner as they defeated the Flames 1-0.

The home team put the pressure on early, scoring the opening goal in the 5th minute with a shot into the lower right corner following a deep cross into the box. The Salukis continued to keep the pressure on the Flames, controlling much of the possession of the ball. The Flames recorded their first shots of the contest in the 27th minute. Bella Baker would have a shot blocked before Riley Collett placed a shot on frame that would be saved. In the 38th minute, Sara Sanabria made back-to-back saves to keep the Salukis from extending their lead. At the halftime whistle, the Flames remained trailing 1-0.

As second-half action was underway, the Flames would get their first corner kick of the match in the 50th minute, which would result in an off-target shot by Marinna Campos. With Francesca Faraci in goal for the final 45 minutes, Faraci would make multiple key saves to keep the Flames within one. Amina Marin picked up the Flames' third shot of the half in the 69th minute with a header off a Kasey Castro free kick. UIC would go on to have three more chances at goal, while SIU would have two, but neither team would find the back of the net before the final whistle, resulting in a 1-0 victory for the Salukis.
