South Bend, Ind. – Hitting the road, the UIC softball team traveled an hour and a half outside of Chicago to take on the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a non-conference contest Tuesday evening. The Flames (4-27) would bring the game within one run but fell short to the Fighting Irish (14-19) 2-1 in a game that lasted just under two hours.
Dee Dee Caskey began the day with a lead-off single up the middle. In the bottom half of the first inning, Grace Fleming made a huge defensive play in center field, firing the ball to catcher Larissa Ortiz to keep the Fighting Irish from scoring and keeping the score even at the end of one. In the bottom of the second inning, the Fighting Irish scored two runs to get on the board and take the lead. The third inning would come and go before the Flames answered with a run in the fourth inning when Ortiz scored off an Emma Gumont single, cutting the Fighting Irish lead to one. Following the Flames run, neither side brought a runner home as the Flames fell to the Fighting Irish 2-1.
