CHICAGO – The UIC baseball team (6-21, 2-4 MVC) continued its season-long home stand on Tuesday, as the Flames welcomed Northwestern (13-13, 5-4 B1G) to Les Miller Field at Curtis Granderson Stadium for the second time this season.
Â
The Wildcats scratched across a run in the top of the second inning on an infield ground out, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead. Pitching and defense dominated the story for much of Tuesday night's game, as the Flames were held to just two hits through the first seven frames. UIC's bullpen was outstanding Tuesday night, combining for six scoreless innings despite six Northwestern hits.
Â
The Flames finally cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth inning, as
AJ Taylor came around to score on a
DJ Butler RBI groundout to tie the game at 1-1. Despite threatening in the bottom of the ninth with the winning run at second, the Flames were unable to push across the winning run, sending the game to extra innings.
Â
Northwestern launched a solo home run in the top of the tenth inning, and UIC was unable to find an answer in the home half, dropping its first game to Northwestern in its last four meetings by a 2-1 final score in 10 innings.
