CHICAGO – On an afternoon where temperatures approached 90 degrees in the Windy City, among the few things hotter were the UIC bats as the Flames (18-31, 14-11 MVC) pounded out 19 hits and scored in each of the final six innings to storm past Belmont in run-rule fashion, 13-3 in seven innings on Thursday at Curtis Granderson Stadium. UIC and Belmont (24-30, 13-12) came into the opener of their three-game MVC series tied for fourth place in the conference standings entering the final week of the regular season.
Eight different UIC hitters collected at least one hit, scored one run and added an RBI during Thursday's offensive onslaught, sparked by a 4-for-5 day from
Jackson Bessette, three hits and three RBI for
AJ Taylor and three hits and three runs for
Thomas Curry. That would be plenty for
Tommy Egan, who improved to 5-2 this season after going the first 6.1 innings on the mound, allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out six.
Taylor got things going for the Flames in the second with an RBI single, the first of two markers in the frame. After Belmont halved the lead in the top of the third, Bessette answered with an RBI double to the right-center field gap. The Bruins came back with a solo home run in the top of the fourth to again pull within a run, but they would get no closer.
UIC blew the game open in the fifth, scoring three times, with the key blow being Taylor's mammoth two-run home run to left field that carried 433 feet. Three proved to be the magic number for the Flames, who would add three more runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, the run-rule clincher coming on
Colin Husko's single down the right field line that plated Curry and sent the UIC faithful home happy (and early).
