Baseball Rallies on Senior Day To Complete Series Sweep of Belmont, 12-7

Flames explode for 46 runs during weekend series to finish tied for third in final MVC standings

CHICAGO – The UIC baseball team capped off a remarkable offensive display this weekend, scoring 12 unanswered runs to rally past Belmont, 12-7 on Saturday afternoon and complete a three-game Missouri Valley Conference sweep of the Bruins to close out the regular season at Curtis Granderson Stadium. With the victory, the Flames (20-31, 16-11 MVC) finish tied with Southern Illinois for third place in the final conference standings and earned the all-important first-round bye for next week's MVC Tournament.

During its three-game set against Belmont (24-32, 13-14), UIC scored a total of 46 runs, including a season-high 21 on Friday, while hammering out 52 hits, including eight home runs. In Saturday's finale, Lucas Smith and James Harris each collected three hits, while Jackson Bessette had a home run and a triple, driving in three runs. Colin Husko and Terrick Thompson-Allen also homered for UIC, with Thompson-Allen blasting his third round-tripper of the weekend, a 434-foot moonshot off the roof of the Thomas Beckham Hall (TBH) apartments beyond the right field wall.

The Flames also got a stellar pitching performance from Kendall Lyons, who came on in relief in the third inning and threw six innings of shutout ball to get the win, scattering three hits while striking out five.

For the first time all weekend, UIC had to play from behind after Belmont scored four in the first and two more in the second. However, Husko's no-doubt solo home run to right in the bottom of the second got the hosts on the board and proved to be the first olive out of the jar in another offensive avalanche.

In the third, the Flames plated four runs, highlighted by an RBI triple from Luke Nowak, who later scored on Smith's bloop single to right. Husko drove in another run a fielder's choice and while he was thrown out stealing during the next at-bat, Thomas Curry alertly came home from third when the throw went through, pulling UIC within 6-5.

Two innings later, it was a brand-new ball game, as Bessette flied to deep right-center and the wind carried the ball just over the wall. Following a Husko walk and a Harris fielder's choice, Thompson-Allen put the Flames in front for the first time and flipped the momentum completely with his towering home run down the right field line (8-6 UIC).

The Flames added to their lead with four more runs in the sixth, as Bessette's wind-blown triple, also down the right-field line, drove in a pair, before Harris rapped an RBI single to left and then Husko scored on a wild pitch. That would be more than enough to put UIC in the driver's seat, with the visiting Bruins managing only a solo home run in the ninth before the Flames cemented the final margin.
