Bak’s Historic No-Hitter Propels Baseball to Series Sweep

Flames dominate Valparaiso to gain crucial ground in MVC standings

VALPARAISO, Ind. – The UIC baseball team (16-29, 12-9 MVC) closed out its three-game series against Valparaiso (8-34, 3-18 MVC) on Saturday, as the Flames and Beacons met for a double header to avoid questionable Sunday weather in the Hoosier State.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Flames wasted no time jumping ahead in game one of Saturday's double-header, as UIC plated two in the top of the first inning thanks to a bases-loaded walk and a fielder's choice. The Beacons answered with a run in the home half of the first, their first run scored of the series to make it 2-1 after one.

Luke Nowak plated a pair of two-out runs in the second, as his fifth home run of the season put the Flames ahead 4-1. In his next plate appearance in the top of the fourth, he drove in his third run of the game as Vidal Colon scored on an RBI single through the right side. Thomas Curry added an RBI single through the left side, putting the Flames in firm control at 6-1.

Terrick Thompson-Allen reached base with one out in the fifth, and promptly stole second, stole third, and came around to score on a throwing error by the Beacons catcher during the steal of third base. UIC tallied two more runs in the sixth and seventh and went on to win game one and secure the series victory with a 9-1 triumph.

GAME TWO RECAP
The Flames' offense continued its hot hitting in game two on Saturday, piling up 10 runs in the first four innings, highlighted by two home runs off the bat of Thomas Curry, UIC also got multiple RBI from AJ Taylor and Jackson Bessette.

The story of game two, however, was the pitching for UIC. Brandon Bak hurled the first no-hitter for the Flames since Ryan Zink threw a no hitter on May 16, 2004, against Youngstown State. The Beacons managed just three baserunners in game two, and Bak needed only 82 total pitches to complete the seven-inning no-hitter.

The Flames captured their first series sweep of the 2025 season, and moved into sole possession of fourth place in the Missouri Valley Conference standings, pending the results of Illinois State's Sunday game against Missouri State.
