CHICAGO – The UIC volleyball team (9-12, 5-4 MVC) welcomed the Valparaiso Beacons (11-10, 3-6 MVC) to Credit Union 1 Arena for a Missouri Valley Conference contest. Looking to get back in the win column, the Flames came out strong and never looked back, including a late comeback in the third to sweep the Beacons in straight sets.
Emma Colombari and
Ana Petrides led the Flames offense for the night. Colombari ended with 13 kills, one service ace, two block assists, and eight digs. Petrides recorded 10 kills, two assists, one service ace, five block assists, and two digs.
Tamara Kisic and Colombari led the Flames offense through the first set, both recording four kills apiece and Colombari notching a service ace. A 4-0 run in the middle of the set, with points coming from
Robyn Ward, Kisic, and Colombari, as well as an error on the Beacons, gave the Flames the gap they needed as they took set one 25-18.
Set two saw 13 ties and five lead changes, but the Flames would come out on top following a late 5-1 run to go up 21-18. During the run, Ward, Kisic, and Petrides all recorded block assists while Kisic picked up a kill. Match point came from a
Mihaela Harizanova kill off a Petrides assist, while the final point came from a Colombari kill off a
Martina Cerrato assist.
The Beacons looked to force a fourth set, but the Flames made a comeback to record the match victory. A late 6-2 run put the Flames back in the match as they took a 25-24 lead. Two more ties would follow, at 25-25 and 26-26, before the Flames recorded back-to-back kills from Pellettieri and Colombari to earn the victory.
